Art Modell spanked his hand against the table – the former Baltimore Ravens/Cleveland Browns owner had heard enough. Sitting at a lunch table several years ago during training camp with a few sports writers, Modell – and others – took offense to my comments that a 1950’s or 60’s Jim Brown would be no more than a special teams player today.

“I could take Jim Brown, play him today and he’d make the Pro Bowl,” Modell said. “I mean Jim Brown now [in 2002], not from his day.”

While Modell, a wonderful and nice man, stood up for his former player, I still disagree. Brown ran over 200 pound linebackers on his way to glory. Taken straight from the black-and-white era, if possible, Brown couldn’t keep up with today’s game.

The same goes for most former Redskins. While many old-time fans remember Sammy Baugh or think Bobby Mitchell could help the 2009 incarnation of the Redskins – they’re wrong. Both were fantastic and great in their era, but without the training and testing against today’s players, either would be happy to get a tryout.

Washington finished 8-8 and at the bottom of the NFC East last season. With holes all over the roster, there might have been some former ‘Skins who could help. But just a few. Read the full story »
